I agree with your conclusion and the oftentimes cruelty of nature.
When I was 8 years old, I remember a bird in distress at close proximity to a tree at my grandfather's house. I assumed the poor thing had fallen from the tree since a bird's nest rested in the tree branches. To make a long story short, I nursed him back to health and in a few days he seemed recovered, even though I didn't know the extent of his injuries. I was pretty proud of myself, but I had no idea what i was doing.
I don’t remember the author (maybe you do) who wrote a poem elucidating the amoral quality of nature. He was basically pointing out that nature did not want to kill you, but it wasn’t going out of its way to save your life either. I think he wrote this poem after nearly drowning at sea. Any clues?
Good for 8-year-old Tom! Of course nowadays they'd haul you away to jail just for touching it.
I don't know the author or poem you refer to... maybe another reader or commenter does and will clear it up.
I wanted a different ending. I think this is why I like fiction- I get to control what happens.
Me, too, Eileen.
I love hummingbirds, but have you ever seen them fight? I had one very bold male who wouldn't let anyone near the feeder. He sat on my grill for hours and attacked any other hummer who tried to feed. At one point he one of his own pinned to the deck with his beak. I fixed his wagon by putting up another feeder at the opposite end of the house. Very entertaining!
Ah, Katie, I'm sorry about the hummingbird.
Laura, I've seen them band together to ward off scrub jays--they're tough little cookies! They chirp and zoom around and really put on quite a show. I've seen them buzzing back and forth in front of a threat, making the most threatening noises--and I've come close to being buzzed myself once or twice (not that I was interfering--just in the wrong place at the wrong time).
Lisa, thank you.
